Maserati first began producing Grand Prix race cars before moving on to road cars after World War II. The company was foundered in the early part of the 20th century by the Maserati brothers as a racing concern and enjoyed considerable success on the race track. However, after the Guidizzolo accident in 1957, Maserati withdrew from active motorsport and focused more on producing luxury sports cars, although the company did produce the 1500cc Maserati A6 from 1947 already. In 1957 Maserati produced the Maserati 3500 GT 2+2 coupé as the successor to the A6, marking the company's first attempt at large-volume Grand Touring car production.
