Mercedes-Benz is one of the oldest car manufacturers and was originally established in 1871 by Karl Benz as Benz & Cie. Due to economic conditions following World War I, Benz & Cie merged with Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1926 to become Daimler-Benz. However, the Daimler brand name had been licensed for use on other automobiles in France and the United Kingdom, and was not available to Daimler-Benz. Instead, the company adopted the Mercedes brand name after DMG model designed by Wilhelm Maybach over twenty years before.
