Although there was never a "Datsun" company, the name ‘Datsun’ was used as brand name by DAT Motorcar Co and Nissan Motor Co. The name originated in 1931 as ‘Datson’, the a model name for a car produced by the DAT Motorcar Co. When Nissan Motor Co took control of DAT Motorcar Co in 1933, they changed it to Datsun and used the name as a brand name until March 1986 when the company rebranded its vehicles as Nissan vehicles.
