Porsche was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche who also designed the Volkswagen Beetle. In fact the German company's first car, the Porsche 64 that was developed in 1939, contained numerous parts taken from the Volkswagen Beetle, including the air-cooled horizontally opposed engine. Today Porsche produces some of the world's ultimate sports cars such as the 911, the Boxster, and the Cayman. It also produces the powerful Cayenne SUV. Other notable vehicles produced by the company, but no longer in production, include the 959 and the 924.
